RapidRamp™ for Emergencies

During emergencies, everyone should have access to the same life-saving resources. It is critical to ensure emergency preparedness planning considers necessary accommodations for individuals who use mobility aids. Per the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), which prohibits discrimination based on a range of disabilities, public accommodations must be equitable. These stipulations are normally associated with buildings and communal spaces but also apply to the flow of pedestrian traffic during emergencies.

Be it a flash flood, fire, tornado, or any other emergency that requires safe shelter, designated gathering places need to be accessible to all. Some of these spaces might have been constructed prior to the adoption and implementation of ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG). In these cases, it is possible that the facility is not accessible to all, and there should be a plan to modify, at least temporarily, access points to ensure accessibility. This need for on-call, quick to deploy, temporary, and adjustable facility retrofits to ensure accessible egress and ingress led PSS to develop RapidRamp.

RapidRamp is a segmented, ADA-compliant ramp that was developed as part of PSS’ RightPath line of accessibility-focused devices. What makes RapidRamp a valuable asset in an emergency is its lightweight build and heavy load capacity of 1,000lbs. RapidRamp comprises 1-foot sections that can interlock together without the need for tools or hardware. The segmented design of RapidRamp allows the lightweight sections to be easily stored on–site, transported, and deployed at a moment’s notice.

Those responsible for emergency preparedness planning need to consider accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Investment in the pursuit of inclusive emergency planning is essential to effective emergency management practices. A one-time investment in RapidRamp, an asset that can be easily and compactly stored until needed, enables communities to be prepared for emergencies in a cost-effective and equitable way.

Disasters bring uncertainty. A thorough and inclusive emergency preparedness plan that accounts for community members with disabilities, such as by incorporating RapidRamp, can help mitigate that uncertainty.
